Niigata Comic Market - Niigata COMITIA

Niigata version of COMITIA under direction of the Gataket secretariat. It is held inside the Toki Messe conference room or main hall twice a year, usually in April and September.

Niigata Comic Market - Niigata Manga Competition

The Niigata Manga Competition (にいがた漫画大賞) is a Manga contest held annually in Niigata City every September. It is sponsored by the Niigata Manga Competition planning committee. It is jointly sponsored by the Niigata Comic Market, the city of Niigata, and the Japan Animation and Manga College, a local vocational school in Niigata city. The competition has been held every year since 1998. It is unique due to the rarity of its sponsorship: a local municipal government sponsors the manga competition.

Shuten-dōji - Niigata

According to the Otogi Bunko version as previously described, Shuten-dōji originally came from Echigo Province (now Niigata Prefecture) and, had lived since the Heian period (8th century) when Dengyō Daishi and Kōbō-Daishi were active. Local legends elaborate that he was a page of the Kokojou-ji (国上寺) (in Tsubame, Niigata) (at the base of Mt. Kugami, there is a Chigo-dō where he is said to have passed through).

Niigata (city) - History

In 1965, the Agano River running through Niigata was polluted with methylmercury from the chemical plant of the Showa Electrical Company. Over 690 people exhibited symptoms of Minamata disease and the outbreak became known as Niigata Minamata disease.

Niigata Prefecture - Agriculture, forestry and fishing

The major industry in Niigata Prefecture is agriculture. Rice is the principal product, and among the prefectures of Japan Niigata is second only to Hokkaidō in rice output. The area around Uonuma is known for producing the Koshihikari variety, widely considered to be the highest-quality rice produced in Japan.
