Waves (band) - Waves album

In 1975 Roger Jarrett, the editor of local music magazine Hot Licks, introduced the band to Kerry Thomas and Guy Morris, co-owners of the magazine and Direction Records, a retail chain and independent record label. On 7 July 1975 the band began a five-day recording session for their debut album at Stebbing Studios in Jervois Rd, Ponsonby, across the road from the eight-bedroom colonial villa where Waves members lived. Gash recalled: "Before walking through the front door of Stebbings, we’d prepared, done a lot of practice and a lot of live work with the material, so we knew it back to front. Let’s face it, we’d been living across the road getting ourselves ready for this moment for about a year."

Waves 2017 came with a completely new concept of celebrating the abstract. It aimed at making the audience forget reality for those three days and take them onto another plane of euphoria. Apart from the Big 3, even the smaller events received overwhelming response. Photography events like ‘Montage’, ‘Mezzo-tint’, ‘Time Lapse’ and ‘Reverse flash’, ‘Waves Open Quiz’, ’Waves Debate Championship’, ‘Rubik’s Cube Challenge’,’Wallstreet Fete’ also saw phenomenal enthusiasm and success.Other events like Searock, Show Me The Funny also showed continued growth from the last edition of Waves. For the Bollywood night, vishal-shekhar gave an unforgettable performance and ended the festival on a great note.

The 2019 edition of Waves is tipped to be bigger and better than all of its previous editions. The theme "En Voyage On Uncharted Ventures" promises to take the performers on an exhilarating and electrifying journey for the 3 days. The fest is to be held from the 1–3 November,Though eliminations of different events such as SeaRock, Inverse and SMTF(Show Me The Funny) have already taken place in different cities across the country.

Waves 2018 featured events organised by the various clubs of Music, Dance, Literary, Quiz, Drama, Moot Court and the Fine Arts. ‘The Big 4’ events of Waves, Natyanjali, Fashion Parade and Mr. And Ms. Waves and SeaRock attracted a huge crowd of cheering students. Specials, another segment, consisted of unconventional events like Treasure Hunt, Photography Competitions, Film making, Last Entrepreneur standing, etc. This edition of Waves attracted a footfall of over 50,000 with students from 150+ colleges taking part in the events. It was also the first edition of Waves in which a YouTube Conclave was held and many known YouTube celebrities like Meghna Kaur and YouTube channel Filter Copy shared a stage and engaged in a fun round of games. The Pro Nites of Waves 2018 saw performances from Farhan Akhtar in the Bollywood Night and Quintino, one of the top 25 DJs in the world performed in the EDM night. The Indie Night saw a performance from music band Anand Bhaskar Collective.

Just considering electromagnetic waves, we note that the preceding discussion strictly applies to plane waves in a homogeneous isotropic non-attenuating medium, whereas in an anisotropic medium (such as birefringent crystals as discussed below) the electric or magnetic field may have longitudinal as well as transverse components. In those cases the electric displacement D and magnetic flux density B still obey the above geometry but due to anisotropy in the electric susceptibility (or in the magnetic permeability), now given by a tensor, the direction of E (or H) may differ from that of D (or B). Even in isotropic media, so-called inhomogeneous waves can be launched into a medium whose refractive index has a significant imaginary part (or "extinction coefficient") such as metals; these fields are also not strictly transverse. Surface waves or waves propagating in a waveguide (such as an optical fiber) are generally not transverse waves, but might be described as an electric or magnetic transverse mode, or a hybrid mode.

For two homogeneous layers of fluids, of mean thickness h below the interface and h′ above – under the action of gravity and bounded above and below by horizontal rigid walls – the dispersion relationship ω 2 = Ω 2 (k) for gravity waves is provided by:

where again ρ and ρ′ are the densities below and above the interface, while coth is the hyperbolic cotangent function. For the case ρ′ is zero this reduces to the dispersion relation of surface gravity waves on water of finite depth h.

Retinal waves - Visualization of waves

Two primary methods of visualizing retinal waves are the use of calcium imaging and multielectrode array. Calcium imaging allows analysis of wave pattern over a large area of the retina (more than with multielectrode recording). Imaging as such has allowed researchers to investigate spatiotemporal properties or waves as well as wave mechanism and function in development.

Electromagnetic waves (such as light), traveling in free space or another homogeneous isotropic non-attenuating medium, are properly described as transverse waves, meaning that a plane wave's electric field vector E and magnetic field H are in directions perpendicular to (or "transverse" to) the direction of wave propagation; E and H are also perpendicular to each other. By convention, the "polarization" direction of an electromagnetic wave is given by its electric field vector. Considering a monochromatic plane wave of optical frequency f (light of vacuum wavelength λ has a frequency of f = c/λ where c is the speed of light), let us take the direction of propagation as the z axis. Being a transverse wave the E and H fields must then contain components only in the x and y directions whereas E z = H z = 0. Using complex (or phasor) notation, the instantaneous physical electric and magnetic fields are given by the real parts of the complex quantities occurring in the following equations. As a function of time t and spatial position z (since for a plane wave in the +z direction the fields have no dependence on x or y) these complex fields can be written as: :

In addition to transverse waves, there are many wave motions where the oscillation is not limited to directions perpendicular to the direction of propagation. These cases are far beyond the scope of the current article which concentrates on transverse waves (such as most electromagnetic waves in bulk media), however one should be aware of cases where the polarization of a coherent wave cannot be described simply using a Jones vector, as we have just done.

however the wave's state of polarization is only dependent on the (complex) ratio of e y to e x . So let us just consider waves whose |e x | 2 + |e y | 2 = 1; this happens to correspond to an intensity of about .00133 watts per square meter in free space (where \eta = \eta_0). And since the absolute phase of a wave is unimportant in discussing its polarization state, let us stipulate that the phase of e x is zero, in other words e x is a real number while e y may be complex. Under these restrictions, e x and e y can be represented as follows: :

Lamb waves - Guided Lamb waves

This phrase is quite often encountered in non-destructive testing. "Guided Lamb Waves" can be defined as Lamb-like waves that are guided by the finite dimensions of real test objects. To add the prefix "guided" to the phrase "Lamb wave" is thus to recognize that Lamb's infinite plate is, in reality, nowhere to be found.

Polarization (waves) - Non-transverse waves

For longitudinal waves such as sound waves in fluids, the direction of oscillation is by definition along the direction of travel, so the issue of polarization is not normally even mentioned. On the other hand, sound waves in a bulk solid can be transverse as well as longitudinal, for a total of three polarization components. In this case, the transverse polarization is associated with the direction of the shear stress and displacement in directions perpendicular to the propagation direction, while the longitudinal polarization describes compression of the solid and vibration along the direction of propagation. The differential propagation of transverse and longitudinal polarizations is important in seismology.

A common situation resulting in an envelope function in both space x and time t is the superposition of two waves of almost the same wavelength and frequency: :

Lamb waves - Guided Lamb waves

In reality we deal with finite plates, or plates wrapped into cylindrical pipes or vessels, or plates cut into thin strips, etc. Lamb wave theory often gives a very good account of much of the wave behavior of such structures. It will not give a perfect account, and that is why the phrase "Guided Lamb Waves" is more practically relevant than "Lamb Waves". One question is how the velocities and mode shapes of the Lamb-like waves will be influenced by the real geometry of the part. For example, the velocity of a Lamb-like wave in a thin cylinder will depend slightly on the radius of the cylinder and on whether the wave is traveling along the axis or round the circumference. Another question is what completely different acoustical behaviors and wave modes may be present in the real geometry of the part. For example, a cylindrical pipe has flexural modes associated with bodily movement of the whole pipe, quite different from the Lamb-like flexural mode of the pipe wall.

Retinal waves - Activity pattern of waves

Waves are generated at random, but limited spatially due to a refractory period in cells after bursts of action potentials have been produced. After a wave has been propagated in one place, it cannot be propagated in the same place. Wave induced refractory areas last about forty to sixty seconds. Research suggests that every region of the retina is at equal probability of generating and propagating a wave. The refractory period also determines the velocity (distance between wave fronts per unit time) and periodicity (average time interval between wave-induced calcium transients or depolarizations recorded in a particular neuron in the ganglion cell layer) The density of refractory cells corresponds to how fast retinal waves propagate, for instance if there is a low number or density of refractory cells, the velocity of propagation will be high.
